"Bara-Dari" is a story of Rajput chivalry and of those times when blood was shed to honour a word, when swords came out of their sheaths even of filmsy pretexts, when brother fought brother to death in duel. . Ranbirsingh, an independent administrator of Ajaygarh who refused to collect the taxes was imprisoned by king Amarsingh. Despite being coaxed by his wife Shakti, Ranbirsingh flouts the wishes of Amarsingh and pays for it with his life in the open court. . Strange are the ways of nature and stranger still the ways in which nature takes its revenge on human beings. Amarsingh gets a son but is warned by fortune-tellers that for eight long years neighter should he see his son nor his wife feed the baby, otherwise misfortune will befall him and the empire. Having no other alternative Amarsingh pursuades Shakti to look after the child. Shakti remonstrates with Amarsingh as he had killed her husband but ultimately she takes pity on the innocent baby and agrees to bring up Amarsinghs son Vijay and her own son Ajeet as twins. Time flies unseen and both Ajeet and Vijay grow up into handsome youngmen and are devoted to one another. The ill-fated time being over, Vijay is sent for by Amarsingh. . Unknown to Vijay, Ajeet had a sweetheart in his village by the name of Gouri. They were deeply in love with each other and their situation was an open secret. . Events take another turn when Ajeet defeats Kiledar Karan Singh who had looted the kings treasure. Karansingh chances to see Gouri one day in the village but here too he is defeated by Ajeet and has to take his heels. . Karansingh reports to Amarsingh in court that Ajeet had turned a rebel against the kingdom but Vijay refuses to believe it and decides to go to Ajaygarh along with his commander-in-chief Teerasingh. Shakti senses danger and takes her son Ajeet away to her mothers place. . Gouri is heart-broken at Ajeets departure and as she is sitting at the Bara-Dari, Vijay chances to glance to her. He falls head over heels in love with her. Back in his kingdom, Vijay is very love-sick and is allowed to marry the girl of his choice-but he is even ignorant of the girls name. . Ajeet is brought to the Palace and promises Vijay to get him married to any girl of his village, never knowing that his choice too is Gouri, his own sweet-heart.
