Avinash (Vinod Khanna) is a professor at Sir K. K. Shukla College. He is a very strict professor and the students want him resticated. They plot and make it appear that he has misbehaved with college student Geeta (Krutika Desai). Avinash is asked to leave the college and the court put him into jail for 6 days. Once he comes out of jail, he is fired from his job. The college chairman also makes it a point to spread the news so that he does not get a job anywhere else. The college also takes away his house and he has to live in a hotel. Since he is without a job, he cannot pay the hotel bills. One day a man approaches him ans asks him to pass on a briefcase to Agnihotri (Suresh Oberoi), owner of Kings hotel. Agnihotri is a smuggler and when he knows that Avinash is looking for a job he offers him a job but Avinash refuses. But circumstances force him to start working for Agnihotri. Sonia, a dancer in Agnihotri's bar falls in love with Avinash. They decide to get married. The story thus revolves around a person who once strictly believed in the law but is now forced by circumstances to do everything against the law.
